“Kim Bentley’s An Introduction to Spirituality breaks down spiritual principles to show how people can live with purpose.
… An Introduction to Spirituality is a riveting book. While it draws on philosophies that are several centuries old, it ably brings those concepts to life for a modern audience, presenting them in a logical, straightforward manner. It also preserves the mysteriousness that is inherent to spirituality, bending explanations in metaphysical and supernatural directions, all while infusing them with scientific sensibilities that result in credence.
… And the book is straightforward in its design: its seven chapters each cover one spiritual topic, including the self, consciousness, and spiritual development. This organization is mindful of a certain hierarchy of spiritual concepts, which is demonstrated by the decision to place divine love in the center of the book. The subjects are further broken down into subtopics, so that the book’s most complex ideas are forwarded with room to stop and ponder their implications. There are also tables and other relevant infographics to help make the topics less abstract.
Further, this is inclusive work: while Swedenborg’s ideas were based in Christianity, Bentley’s work takes on an omnist approach, showing how its spiritual concepts line up with multiple religions and philosophies. … Bentley’s work ends up being approachable to those from many religions and belief systems as a result.
The book’s joyous tone makes it all the more appealing. There’s exuberance to its treatment of concepts like divine love, and even difficult topics, including hell, are treated in a way that encourages turning toward what’s light. And throughout, Bentley projects hope and excitement that his concepts can change and help humanity.
An Introduction to Spirituality is a clear-cut overview of spirituality, showing how it can lead to more fulfilling living.”

“Kim Bentley has produced a work of profound simplicity. His ability to navigate the complexity of the spiritual teachings found in the works of Emanuel Swedenborg and weave them into a coherent tapestry is, in itself, a remarkable feat. But that he has also been able to integrate live ideas found within the contemporary spiritual landscape leaves his readers with a gift that will serve to support them in their spiritual journey whether they are new to these ideas or are seasoned practitioners.”

“… A comprehensive analysis of spirituality as it pertains to both religion and contemporary living, Bentley offers readers a clear and concise explanation of a myriad of ‘core spiritual principles’ in the hope that a better understanding of this topic will inform a greater sense of purpose. It’s an admittedly lofty goal, but Bentley is more than up to the challenge.
… Divided into seven chapters, Bentley begins by outlining and defining spiritual growth, making a compelling case for the many benefits one can hope to obtain. From there, readers are offered an in-depth look at everything from free will and faith to heaven and hell. While the Australian author leans heavily on the book’s extensive bibliography, Bentley does an admirable job of tying together a massive amount of information, breaking down some notoriously nebulous topics into easily digested portions of text. Additionally, the book is complemented with a variety of visual aids (graphs, illustrations, etc.), which add an element of palpability to some pretty complex spiritual systems (such as chakras or the various levels of consciousness).”

“… Swedenborg achieved great success as a scientist, engineer, and Swedish government official. At 56, he had a vision of Christ and spent the rest of his life investigating the paranormal and developing an understanding of the soul, higher mind, lower mind, spiritual body, and physical body. An engineer, too, Bentley makes Swedenborg’s concepts accessible to anyone intent on spiritual development. He also discusses the work of contemporary authors, such as healer Barbara Brennan and mystic Dr. David Hawkins, known for his research on consciousness.
… With clinical writing devoid of a unique voice, this reads like a science textbook. Yet to Bentley’s credit, his engineering background allows him to organize these concepts clearly and concisely, from the superficial to the granular. Sidebars and simple infographics help readers grasp key words and concepts. There’s also a bibliography of books by and about Swedenborg, Brennan, Hawkins and others.
For seekers who believe in God, or are open to such belief, this is a valuable narrative, all in the service of helping readers find more love, joy, and fulfillment in this life, with the promise of better things to come.”

There are times when we all have questioned reality and contemplated the deeper meaning of life and the world. Although most of the time, we got lost in the hodgepodge of content and theories and failed to grasp anything useful. If you can relate to this, then Kim Bentley’s book An Introduction to Spirituality will be the perfect fit for you.
I received this book late last year in November and had the chance to read it when I suffered from COVID. So why am I telling this? Because that’s when I was at a low point of my life, and when you read this kind of work, it brings you back and gives meaning to one’s life.
I have read many books on this topic, but this stands out for two reasons. Firstly, most of the segments are inspired by Emanuel Swedenborg’s spiritual teachings, and secondly, Kim Bentley integrates spirituality and elements of religion in a unique and accessible way.
An Introduction to Spirituality is not a step-by-step guide to follow. Instead, it is a book that feels that you’re having open discussions with the author, who simplifies and makes sense of the vast subject of spirituality without losing meaning.
This book is divided into seven parts, including ourselves, our relationship with the divine, spiritual growth, consciousness, and life in the other dimensions. What we see in the mirror is our physical self, but there is so much more around our body that we cannot see but can sometimes feel. Each person has a different aura, and when we come near them, we can feel their energies, whether good or evil. Unfortunately, many of us never focus on these facts, but these are significant if we wish for a peaceful life.
In some parts of the text, I felt that I was reading more about other authors’ works instead of Kim’s individual experiences. I personally believe that spirituality is about peace of mind and attaining higher knowledge, and separate from religion and God. However, reading this illuminating body of work has helped me to have a more comprehensive and holistic outlook on the subject.
Kim Bentley’s work will help you understand the universal concept of spirituality in lucid language. A beginner can pick this book to get acquainted with the subject, but I recommend it to those who are already keen on spirituality and looking for something fresh to grasp.
